Prison phone charges threaten prevention of reoffending - Howarth
24 June 2008

Commenting on today’s ‘super complaint’ by the National Consumer Council over the cost of phone calls from prisons, Liberal Democrat Justice Spokesperson, David Howarth said:

"If prisoners lose contact with their families while inside the cost to society could be far greater than the price of a premium rate phonecall.

"The support of loved ones is a crucial factor in helping to prevent re-offending on release.

"With record overcrowding levels meaning many prisoners are housed far away from their families, telephone calls are even more important.

"There are serious questions about the necessity of these phone charges and who keeps the revenue."
