Prisoner sentenced to 36 years suspended for 20 years

A middle aged prisoner was sentenced to 36 years rigorous imprisonment suspended for 20 years by Sumudu Premachandra, Magistrate and ADJ Kandy when he pleaded guilty in 9 theft cases.

The prisoner Ramanathan Sonai of Hantane, Kandy was charged with theft of 9 cassettes worth over Rs. 125,000 and retention of stolen cassettes between April 25, 2004 and February 1, 2006. The prisoner pleaded guilty to both charges in all 9 cases and admitted that he had been convicted several times in house breaking and theft cases.

He was sentenced to 4 years RI in each case. Sub Inspector A.A.M. Fonseka of Kandy crimes informed court that accused had stolen the cassettes from vehicles parked on the road and private garages in and around Kandy.
